Posted by cienciayficcion en 06/06/2012

The Manual of Scientific Style

Posted by cienciayficcion en 23/05/2012

Science research writing

Posted by cienciayficcion en 02/07/2010

  • Glasman-Deal, Hilary : Science research writing for non-native speakers of English. London : Imperial College Press, 2010

This book is designed to enable non-native English speakers to write science research for publication in English. It can also be used by English speakers and is a practical, user-friendly book intended as a fast, do-it-yourself guide for those whose English language proficiency is above intermediate. The approach is based on material developed from teaching graduate students at Imperial College London and has been extensively piloted. The book guides the reader through the process of writing science research and will also help with writing a Master’s or Doctoral thesis in English.

Science writing is much easier than it looks because the structure and language are conventional. The aim of this book is to help the reader discover a template or model for science research writing and then to provide the grammar and vocabulary tools needed to operate that model. There are five units: Introduction, Methodology, Results, Discussion/Conclusion and Abstract. The reader develops a model for each section of the research article through sample texts and exercises; this is followed by a Grammar and Writing Skills section designed to respond to frequently-asked questions as well as a Vocabulary list including examples of how the words and phrases are to be used.

The Oxford book of modern science writting

Posted by cienciayficcion en 17/09/2009

  • Dawkins, Richard (ed. lit.): The Oxford book of modern science writting. Oxford ; New York : Oxford University Press, 2008

Oxford book of modern science writtingThis sparkling collection of writting reveals how many of the best scientists have displayed as much imagination and skill with words as they have with equations or experiments. Here are writtings by D’Arcy Thompson, Sir Arthur Eddington, Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, Stephen Jay Gould, J.B.S. Haldane, G.H. Hardy, Loren Eiseley, Rachel Carson, Stephen Hawking, Primo Levi, Peter Medawar, Roger Penrose, Steven Pinker, Martin Rees, Erwin Schrödinger, Alan Turing, and Francis Crick, among many others. The topics range from relativity, many dimensions, and many possible universes, to playful explorations of Gödel’s theorem, lost Cambrian shores, flowers, sand piles, wet towels and thermodynamics, and the uniqueness of being human.

Selected and introduced with personal commentaries by Richard Dawkins, The Oxford book of modern science writting brings together extracts and short pieces from a variety of scientific works from the early 20th century on. Together, they capture the allure of understanding the world through science, to give a taste of the imagination and ideas, the constant striving, and the discoveries and reflections that have ever driven science. Framed in this modern treasury, they also reflect the power and importance of the communication of science in the modern world, and the lasting value of fine, clear, often literary science writing in a world rapidly changing through science and its applications.

Writing scientific research articles

Posted by cienciayficcion en 06/08/2009

  • Cargill, Margaret ; O’Connor, Patrick: Writing scientific research articles : strategy and steps. Hoboken, N.J. : Wiley-Blackwell, 2009

Writing scientific research articlesWriting Scientific Research Articles: Strategy and Steps guides authors in how to write, as well as what to write, to improve their chances of having their articles accepted for publication in international, peer reviewed journals. The book is designed for scientists who use English as a first or an additional language; for research students and those who teach them paper writing skills; and for early-career researchers wanting to hone their skills as authors and mentors. It provides clear processes for selecting target journals and writing each section of a manuscript, starting with the results. The stepwise learning process uses practical exercises to develop writing and data presentation skills through analysis of well-written example papers. Strategies are presented for responding to referee comments, as well as ideas for developing discipline-specific English language skills for manuscript writing. The book is designed for use by individuals or in a class setting.

Peer review and manuscript management in scientific journals

Posted by cienciayficcion en 11/03/2009

  • Hames, Irene: Peer review and manuscript management in scientific journals : Guidelines for good practice. Malden : Blackwell, cop. 2007

peer-review-and-manuscript-management-in-scientific-journalsThis comprehensive yet concise book provides a thorough and complete guide to every aspect of managing the peer review process for scientific journals. Until now, little information has been readily available on how this important facet of the journal publishing process should be conducted properly. “Peer Review and Manuscript Management in Scientific Journals” fills this gap and provides clear guidance on all aspects of peer review, from manuscript submission to final decision.

“Peer Review and Manuscript Management in Scientific Journals” is an essential reference for science journal editors, editorial office staff and publishers. It is an invaluable handbook for the set-up of new Editorial Offices, as well as a useful reference for well-established journals which may need guidance on a particular situation, or may want to review their current practices. Although intended primarily for journals in science, much of its content will be relevant to other scholarly areas.
